Meaning

(O Saraswati, goddess of poetry!) Where had you gone? My sweet life! My nectar of music! When I saw the moon, when I heard the sea's waves and the wind, when I watched the night, when I worshipped the sun in the morning, you would well up like nectar, and in that newness I would forget my sorrow.

For four months you have thrown me into a poverty of love. I praise your feet: may all my sin be destroyed, and may the Ganga of wisdom pour on my tongue always with its sound. You make the Vedas; you shine in the eyes of the gods.

You who are like the apple of my eye! Here, morning and evening, sing richly the joy of Lakshmi and the glory of the feet of great Shakti! Grow in my mouth and my mind; stay near me! Will you ever again leave your servant?

So that the demon called 'I' perishes, so that the many monkeys of restlessness are bound, so that I gain a light like the sky, so that my mind stays firm in truth - pour like honey! Soothe Lakshmi's anger (end my poverty)! Remove my defects! Give me good zeal and dignity! Stop evil! Grant me courage and clarity here!

Losing my sense in maya, I forgot to honour you. Bearing with all my faults, I bow to you as Mother and beg your grace. I have sworn with my mouth: I will not forget you again; do not forget me!

Explanation

The greatest suffering for a poet is when poetry will not come. Having been unable to write for four months, Bharathiyar asks Saraswati, 'Where had you gone?', as one would ask a beloved. Note too that he addresses her in the respectful plural throughout.

Where does poetry come from? From seeing nature - the moon, the sea, the wind, the night, the sun. Saraswati speaks through nature. But for her to come, 'the demon called I' must die and 'the monkeys of restlessness' must be bound: art is born only in a calm mind without ego. 'May the Ganga of wisdom pour on my tongue' recalls the Vedic tradition in which Saraswati is praised as both river and speech.

'Soothe Lakshmi's anger' - he asks Saraswati herself to undo the old saying that Lakshmi and Saraswati do not live together (wealth does not stay with the learned). 'I bowed to you as Mother' - the song begins with a beloved and ends with the Mother.

To reflect on

He says art is born when 'the demon called I' dies. When did your best work come - when you forgot yourself?
