Meaning
Woman called Mind! Long may you live; listen! You cling to one thing and swing to and fro; you wander towards the next, and the next after that. If told 'hold to the good', you tire and let it slip from your hand. What you are told to let go of, you will not let go, but go and fall into it. What you have touched you touch again and again. When you see something new you lose your senses; you long for the new, and you fear the new. Like a bee that keeps returning to the honey, you fall eagerly upon old things. You complain, 'we see nothing new in the world, only the old'. Fie! Like a crow that loves a corpse, when you see base things such as rotting, dying and fearing, you rush to join in.
And yet you keep for me a love that never changes; you protect my life; as the eye of the eye, the ear of the ear, the sense that makes the senses perceive, you make me run on the wheel of the world. You give every pleasure; you are dazed by pleasure; seeking only pleasure you commit countless errors; you guard pleasure and destroy sorrow; thinking it pleasure you fall into sorrow. You do not know yourself; you bore through the whole world. You grieve to see the one Supreme that stands behind you; told 'see', you do not see. You know the laws of the world one by one; you do not know the common ground; you do not see the substance.
Woman called Mind! Long may you live; listen! I do not know well the way to live with you. As in all these days, from now on too I will seek your pleasure; I will strive only to raise you higher; I will also seek liberation. The thing called Shiva, which has not met your eye but has met mine, I will praise every day, and so make your joy grow.

Explanation
This is one of Bharathiyar's subtlest psychological songs. He speaks to the mind as a woman, at times a mischievous companion and at times a loving one. Blaming the mind and loving it are in the same song.
'The eye of the eye, the ear of the ear' is a Tamil form of the famous line of the Kena Upanishad (1.2): 'It is the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind, the speech of speech, the breath of breath, the eye of the eye.' Bharathiyar says it to the mind itself: because the mind reflects the light of the Self, it moves the senses.
'You grieve to see the Supreme that stands behind you; told to see, you do not see.' The mind cannot see itself, as the eye cannot see itself. So Bharathiyar does not tell the mind to be destroyed; he says that through 'Shiva, who met my eye though not yours', he will give joy to the mind itself. It is a way of raising the mind with love instead of fighting it.

What did your mind keep touching again and again today? How could you turn it gently, with love?
