Meaning

Of the three aims established in this world, virtue, wealth and pleasure, the one who gains wealth, the middle one, gains the two on either side as well. One who fails to gain it suffers like something put into a furnace and boiled.

Explanation

Of the four aims of life (dharma, artha, kama and moksha), the verse speaks of the first three. Wealth stands in the middle and supports the other two.

Only with means can one give in charity and run a household, so earning honestly is itself a duty.

To reflect on

Wealth is the bridge between virtue and joy.
