Eetha lisaiyaa thilamaisaen neengkuthalaal / Kaatha lavarum karuththallar - kaathaliththu / Aathunaa mennu mavaavinaik kaivittup / Poavathae poalum porul.

Meaning

Once you have nothing left to give and your youth has gone far away, even those who loved you no longer care. So it seems the wise course is to give up the craving that says 'we shall yet become something', and go the way of renunciation.

Explanation

Affection often circles around wealth and youth. When both go, so does the affection.

One who sees this does not get caught in disappointment but turns to renunciation. That is true greatness.

The Ramayana, Sundara Kanda

The Smallest Monkey in the Army

From the Ramayana. Hanuman had leapt a hundred yojanas across the ocean, found Sita in the Ashoka grove, and burned Lanka. Before he left, Sita wondered aloud how Rama's army could ever cross the sea.

Hanuman answered: "In Sugriva's army there are many monkeys stronger than I am, and none who is weaker. Messengers are always the least of the army; the great ones are not sent on errands." The one who had done the impossible counted himself the smallest. That humility is what made him great.

To reflect on

Let go of craving before affection lets go of you.
