சென்றே எறிப ஒருகால் சிறுவரைநின்றே எறிப பறையினை - நன்றேகாண்முக்காலைக் கொட்டினுள் மூடித்தீக் கொண்டுஎழுவர்செத்தாரைச் சாவார் சுமந்து.

பொருள்
ஒருமுறை (சாப்பறையை) சற்று நடந்து சென்று அடிப்பர்; சிறிது நேரம் நின்று அடிப்பர். மூன்றாம் முறை அடித்தவுடன் பிணத்தைத் துணியால் மூடித் தீயோடு எடுத்துச் செல்வர். நன்றாகப் பார்: இறந்தவரைச் சுமப்பவர்களும் சாகப் போகிறவர்களே.
Meaning
Once they walk a little and beat the drum, then they stand a while and beat it again. At the third beat they cover the body, take up the fire and go. Look well: those who carry the dead are themselves the dying.

சாவுச் சடங்கின் மூன்று பறையடிகளைப் பாடல் வரிசையாகச் சொல்கிறது. மூன்றாம் அடிக்குப் பின் பிணம் சுடுகாட்டுக்குச் செல்கிறது.
இறுதி அடி கூர்மையானது: பிணம் சுமப்பவரும் நாளை சுமக்கப்படுபவரே. 'சாவார் சுமந்து' என்ற சொல்லே பாடலின் மையம்.
Explanation
The verse lists the three beats of the funeral drum; after the third, the body is carried to the burning ground.
The last line cuts sharp: those carrying the corpse will be carried tomorrow. 'The dying carry the dead' is the heart of the verse.
