கணம்கொண்டு சுற்றத்தார் கல்லென் றலறப்பிணம்கொண்டு காட்டுய்ப்பார்க் கண்டும் - மணம் கொண்டீண்டுஉண்டுண்டுண் டென்னும் உணர்வினால் சாற்றுமேடொண்டொண்டொ டென்னும் பறை.

பொருள்
சுற்றத்தார் கூட்டமாகக் கல்லென்று அலறப் பிணத்தைச் சுடுகாட்டுக்குக் கொண்டு செல்வதைக் கண்டும், இங்கே மணம் செய்துகொண்டு 'உடல் நிலைத்திருக்கும், உண்டு, உண்டு' என்று எண்ணுபவனுக்கு, சாப்பறை 'டொண் டொண் டொடு' என்று ஒலித்து (உடல் நிலையாது என்று) அறிவிக்கிறது.
Meaning
He sees the kin gather and wail as a corpse is carried to the burning ground, and still marries and feasts here, thinking 'there is time, there is time'. To him the funeral drum answers: ḍoṇ, ḍoṇ, ḍoḍu, telling him the body will not last.

விளக்கம்
'உண்டு உண்டு உண்டு' (இன்னும் காலம் உண்டு) என்று நினைக்கும் மனத்துக்குப் பறை 'டொண் டொண் டொடு' என்று பதில் சொல்கிறது. இரண்டு ஒலிகளும் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று எதிர் நிற்கின்றன.
சாவைக் கண்முன் கண்டும் மனிதன் தனக்கு அது வராது என்று எண்ணுகிறான்; அதுவே மிகப்பெரிய மயக்கம்.
Explanation
The mind says 'uṇḍu, uṇḍu, uṇḍu' (there is still time); the drum replies 'ḍoṇ, ḍoṇ, ḍoḍu'. The two sounds answer each other.
Man watches death before his eyes and still thinks it will not come for him; that is the deepest delusion.
