Meaning

Even those who rode with the white parasol over the elephant's head, like the moon rising above a mountain, end up spoken of as having fallen asleep on the ground; nothing else of them remains in this world.

Explanation

Height is shown twice: the moon rising over a mountain, the parasol over an elephant's head. Both are images of the summit. Then a single line levels that summit with the ground.

The word for being spoken of is harsh. The dead do not stay in memory; they stay in talk. That is the verse's conclusion.

The Mahabharata, Vana Parva (Yaksha Prashna)

The Greatest Wonder

From the Mahabharata. Thirsty in the forest, four Pandava brothers drank from a lake without answering the questions of the Yaksha who guarded it, and fell lifeless. Yudhishthira came last and agreed to answer.

Among many questions the Yaksha asked, "What is the greatest wonder?" Yudhishthira replied: "Every day, living beings go to the house of Yama, yet those who remain behave as if they will live forever. What could be more wonderful than this?" Pleased, the Yaksha, who was Dharma himself, restored all four brothers to life.

To reflect on

The summit is only a view; the ground is the same for everyone.
