Explanation

A person's walk shows their mind. One who shrinks and cowers shows a slave's mind; one who walks upright shows self-respect. The bull is Nandi, Shiva's mount, and the Puranas call him the form of dharma.
Thiruvalluvar says that those without an honourable home life lack 'the proud gait of a bull' before those who scorn them (Kural 59); to walk like a bull is the mark of a life of self-respect. This is the 'upright, noble gait' that Bharathiyar praises elsewhere.
