தனதாகத் தான்கொடான் தாயத் தவரும்தமதாய போழ்தே கொடாஅர் - தனதாகமுன்னே கொடுப்பின் அவர்கடியார் தான்கடியான்பின்னை அவர்கொடுக்கும் போழ்து.

பொருள்
தனதாக இருக்கும்போது அவன் ஈயான்; அவனைச் சேர்ந்தோரும் தம் முறை வந்ததும் ஈயார். தனதாக இருக்கும்போதே முன்னதாகக் கொடுப்பானேனால், அவர்களும் எளிதாக மீள்வார்கள், அவனும் மீள்வான்; இல்லாவிட்டால், தன்னிடமிருந்து போன பின்னரே அவர்கள் கொடுக்கும் நேரம் வரும்.
Meaning
While it is his, he gives nothing; his heirs too give nothing in their turn. If he gives while it is still his, they are spared and he is spared as well — otherwise the time when they give comes only after the wealth has left him.

விளக்கம்
பாடல் ஒரு கணக்கை இடுகிறது. செல்வம் இருக்கும் காலம் ஒன்றே; ஆனால் அக்காலத்தில் செய்யப்படும் ஒரு கொடை பலருக்குப் பயன்படுகிறது. பின்னர் அதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் அவர்களும், தம் கையில் சேர்ந்ததும் அதே வழியைத்தான் கடைப்பிடிப்பார்கள். எனவே தாமதம் ஒரு வழக்காகிறது.
அதனால் 'முன்னது' என்ற சொல் பாடலின் இதயம். கொடுக்க வேண்டிய இடம் இன்றைக்கே; வைத்திருக்க வேண்டிய இடம் மறுநாள் அன்று. ஒருவன் இறக்கும் வரை காத்தால், காலம் முழுவதும் அந்தக் காவலின் சுமையும், இறுதியில் பயனற்றுப் போனதும் என இரண்டும் சேர்ந்தே மிச்சம் இருக்கும்.
Explanation
The verse does a reckoning. There is only one time when wealth is held, and a gift made in that time does good to many. Those who receive it later will follow the very same habit once it reaches their hands; so delay becomes the custom.
Therefore the word 'beforehand' is the heart of this verse. Now is the time to give, not some later day. If a man guards his hoard until he dies, he is left with two things together: the whole burden of the watching, and a thing that in the end proved of no use.
