பொருள்
ஈட்டுவதும் துன்பம்; ஈட்டிய ஒளிமிகுந்த பொருளைக் காப்பதும் அங்கேயே கடுந்துன்பம்; காப்பதில் குறை ஏற்பட்டால் அதுவும் துன்பம்; இழந்து போனதே கெடிய துன்பம். அந்தத் துன்பத்துக்கு உறைவிடம் அந்தப் பொரளே.
Meaning
To earn is pain; to guard what one has earned is sharp pain on the spot; a failure in the guarding is pain, and to lose it is the harshest pain. Wealth itself is the dwelling place of sorrow.

பாடல் ஓர் எண்ணிக்கையை இடுகிறது, ஒவ்வொரு வரியிலும் துன்பம் ஒரு படி மேலே போகிறது. ஈட்டுதல் — முதல் துன்பம். அதைக் காத்தல் — கடும் துன்பம். காப்பதில் குறை ஏற்படுதல் — துன்பம். அழிந்து போதல் — கெடிய துன்பம். இறுதியில் சொல் செயலிலிருந்து பொருளை நோக்கி நகர்வதாக, துன்பத்துக்கு உறைவிடம் அந்தப் பொரளே என்று முடிகிறது.
பாடல் உழைப்பையே குற்றம் சொல்லவில்லை; பொருளோடு இணைத்துக் கொள்ளும் மனத்தின் சுமையைத் திறந்து காட்டுகிறது. தேடுவதில் ஒரு உழைப்பு; காக்கும் காலத்தில் ஒரு அச்சம்; இழக்கும் போது ஒரு சிதறல். இம்மூன்றும் இல்லத்தில் உற்றார் போல் உடன் வருகின்றன.
Explanation
The verse makes a tally, and with each line the pain moves one step higher. Earning is the first pain; guarding what is earned is the sharp one; failing in that guard is pain, and losing is the harshest. Then, as if the word turned from the deed toward the thing, it closes: wealth itself is where pain lives.
The verse does not accuse labour; it lays open the load that a mind joins to its money. There is effort in getting it, fear through the years of keeping it, and a scattering when it goes. All three come and sit in the household like tenants who never leave.
