Meaning

In the days of plenty, people crowd around like crows at a carcass, all eagerness to serve; in the days when a man wanders like a bee, there is not one in this world to ask whether he is well.

Explanation

The first half shows a crowd. While there is something to share, many surround a man and wait on him. But that service is not aimed at the man; it is aimed at what he has. The crows do not gather for the body but for where the body lies.

The second half scatters the crowd. Let a man walk about empty-handed and there is not even an enquiry after him. The verse's severity lies here: not one small sentence, 'are you well?', can be had. So the verse does not teach how to find a friend; it teaches how to recognise one who only plays the friend. What is revealed when the money thins is a face, and the size of a heart.

To reflect on

When the purse thins, what shows is the true face and the true measure of a heart.
