Meaning

In the cool hill country where roaring falls pour over the rocks, when want once takes a man in its arms, the pride of the clan he was born to fades, his great manliness fades, and even his excellent learning fades.

Explanation

The opening lines show a mountain: a waterfall coming down over the rock, the country cool and rich. All that beauty is there for one purpose — to make the loss that follows cut deeper.

Then come three losses in a row: clan, manliness, learning. These three are what we take to be a man's own, inseparable from him. Want takes them all at once. So the verse is not belittling birth or learning; it says quietly that money is the ground they stand on. When the purse is empty, neither character nor knowledge shows in the world's eye.

To reflect on

For character and learning to be seen at all, money has to be the ground beneath them.
