Meaning

Even if he lives with a patched rag wrapped round his waist, a man who has ten or eight coins to his name is respected among many. Those born into the very same family who have nothing at all are counted no better than corpses.

Explanation

The world looks not at the clothes but at the purse. Born to the same family, the one with nothing has no standing.

The chapter on poverty does not hide its bitter truths.

The Bhagavata Purana, Book 10

Kuchela's Handful of Rice

From the Bhagavata Purana. Kuchela (Sudama) had studied with Krishna as a boy, but he grew up desperately poor, with a wife and children who often went hungry. At last his wife begged him to visit his old friend, now the king of Dvaraka. He went, carrying the only gift they had: a few handfuls of flattened rice tied in a rag.

Krishna ran to meet him, washed his feet and seated him on his own couch. Kuchela was too ashamed to offer his poor gift, but Krishna pulled the bundle from him and ate a handful with delight. Kuchela left without asking for anything, and came home to find a palace where his hut had stood. Poverty is bitter, but it cannot take away the dignity of one who will not beg.
