Meaning

When people far beneath them say unworthy things to their face, the great do not break into a sweat of rage. The base man broods over it, tells it to the whole town, and leaps about butting his head against a pillar.

Explanation

Two men, the same insult. The great one stays calm; the small one gathers the town and butts his head on a pillar.

An insult has only as much force as the person it lands on gives it.

To reflect on

Don't butt your head on the pillar over an insult.
