Meaning

The thirty-six tattvas do not know themselves as 'this is us'. If you ask how, listen: the six pure tastes do not know themselves. Take it that the tattvas are like them.

Explanation

There are six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. Sugar does not know that it is sweet. In the same way body, senses, mind and intellect are all insentient; they do not know themselves. Awareness is not in them. The next verse says who it is that knows.

To reflect on

If we saw that even our mind is not 'I' but an instrument, would we fear its restlessness less?
