Meaning
Shiva, grace, the soul, veiling and malam: these five are the order of His five letters. If the soul recites beginning with na ('Namasivaya'), it does not seek grace; to receive the grace that seeks you, go and recite beginning with si ('Sivayanama').

Explanation
In the order 'Namasivaya', malam and veiling come first; it is the state of the soul facing the bond (the gross panchakshara). In the order 'Sivayanama', Shiva and grace come first; it is the soul turned toward the Lord (the subtle panchakshara). Because the soul (ya) takes the colour of what it stands next to, the guru asks for the order that sets the soul beside Shiva. In Shaiva tradition this is the way of recitation received from a guru through initiation.
