Explanation

In this verse the heroine admits a bitter truth. The hero may be one who does not esteem her and acts as he pleases. She knows that he does not take her into account. Yet her eyes do not rest without seeing him. 'Penaadhu' means without cherishing or heeding. 'Petpave seyinum' means even if he does just as he likes. So, even after fully knowing his faults, her eyes seek him.

Here the eyes are shown as separate organs that do not obey her reason. Reason says, 'He does not respect you'; the eyes strain to see him. This struggle between heart and reason comes again and again in the Kamathuppaal. Valluvar does not condemn it; he records its truth beautifully.

Commentators take this as the heroine answering her friend, who asked whether she should not feel aggrieved with him. She does not reject the friend's counsel, but she does not hide her state either. Her honesty is as beautiful as her love.

The verse gently shows that love does not always yield to the accounts of reason. We may recognise that there is a mind in us that seeks even someone who does not respect us, and understand it without scolding ourselves for it. At the same time a reader may find in it a warning that love should not lose self-respect.

Valluvar here honours the strength of love and its pain together. He does not tell her what to do; he lets her speak truthfully, and that truthfulness is the lesson.

A story

The Bee Song: The Gopis Speak to a Bee

This is the story of the part called 'Bhramara Gita', the Bee Song, in the tenth canto of the Bhagavata Purana.

After Krishna left Vrindavan for Mathura, he sent his friend Uddhava to the gopis to console them. When Uddhava came to Vrindavan, the gopis were deeply wasted by separation. The Bhagavata says that Radha, seeing a bee flying near her, began to speak to it.

Taking the bee for Krishna's messenger, she spoke with a little anger and humour. 'O bee, you are just like your master, who goes from flower to flower, drinks the honey and leaves. He left us and went to Mathura seeking someone else. Do not speak to us of him,' she said.

But in the midst of those angry words her longing kept showing. 'Though he does not esteem us, our eyes strain to see him. One who has once heard his speech cannot forget it,' she said, her heart melting.

The Bhagavata says that Uddhava, hearing that speech, understood the depth of their love and praised their devotion. This song of the gopis is much honoured in devotional literature.

As Valluvar's heroine says, 'though he does not cherish me and does as he pleases, my eyes do not rest without seeing him', so the gopis' eyes sought the very one who did not cherish them.

This episode sweetly shows the tradition in which devotees lament and sing with familiarity even of the Lord's separation.

To reflect on

Where have you found your heart seeking someone your reason had already told you to forget, and how did you respond with kindness to yourself?
