Gambling · Soodhu

This chapter warns that dice and the gambling hall strip a man by degrees of wealth, fame, learning, food, clothing and good character. Even a win is only the bait on the angler's hook, and the more one loses the stronger the craving grows, says Valluvar.

Introduction

The chapter on Gambling belongs to the Porutpaal, in the section on Friendship. Among the many ways in which a man seeking wealth may be ruined, gambling is the most seductive, and that is why Valluvar gave it a chapter of its own. Other vices announce themselves as vices. Gambling first arrives as pleasure, play and victory, and that appearance is precisely its snare. The very first couplet compares it to the angler's hook. The fish that swallows the bait feels it has won a meal, but inside it is the barb. A small win at the dice is likewise only an invitation to a larger loss.

The chapter then walks down ten steps of ruin. First comes the illusion of victory, then the arithmetic of gaining one and losing a hundred, then wealth passing into strangers' hands, then loss of reputation, then the poverty of the gambler, then the destruction of ancestral wealth and character, then the death of compassion and truthfulness, and finally the departure of learning, clothing and food together. The last couplet holds a subtle psychological truth: as the gambler loves the game more with every loss, so the soul clings to life more tightly the more it suffers. Gambling is thus shown less as a habit than as a stubborn attachment.

In Hindu tradition the greatest warnings against dice are found in the Mahabharata itself. Yudhishthira, the very embodiment of dharma, lost his kingdom, his brothers and his wife in the game with Shakuni. In the Nalopakhyana of the Vana Parva, King Nala, seized by the spirit of Kali, gambled with his brother Pushkara and lost his realm. If even men firm in righteousness fall to dice, the epics say, no one is safe. Among the four purusharthas, gambling destroys dharma, artha and kama all at once: it wastes wealth, corrupts truthful speech and honest dealing, and withers the joy of family life.

Classical commentators differ a little. Some read the chapter chiefly as a caution to kings, who held the gaming-hall in their courts, while others read it for every householder. Customary festival play, as at Deepavali in some homes, is generally understood as light social fun, and the common counsel is to keep even that within modest bounds. Every reader may profitably ask where the thought of winning begins to pull at his own life.

Chapter story

Nala and Pushkara

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata there is a section called the Nalopakhyana. It is the tale that the sage Brihadashva told Yudhishthira when the Pandava sat in the forest, sunk in sorrow. Nala, king of the Nishadhas, was handsome and virtuous, and a master of horses and of cookery. Damayanti, princess of Vidarbha, chose him as her husband in the presence of the gods. This angered Kali, the spirit of the dark age, who came with Dvapara and waited for even the smallest flaw in Nala. He waited twelve years.

One evening Nala performed his twilight worship with a slight lapse of purity. In that small gap Kali entered his body. At the same time Kali went to Nala's brother Pushkara and said, "Challenge Nala to dice. I will stand by you." Pushkara called him. Nala knew in his heart that it was wrong, yet, seized by Kali, he could not refuse. Damayanti came with the ministers and begged him, "My lord, stop this game." But Nala did not even look at her.

The game went on for months. Gold, chariots, elephants and at last the whole kingdom were lost. Each time he lost, Nala said, "I will win it back in the next throw." The more he lost, the more the craving grew. At the end he had to go to the forest in only the clothes he wore. Damayanti sent their son and daughter to her father in Vidarbha. Then Nala and Damayanti wandered in the wilderness.

Starving, Nala threw his only garment over some birds he hoped to catch, and the birds flew away carrying even that cloth. Afterwards he shared half of Damayanti's garment. At last he left her sleeping in the forest and went away. From the height of royal life, because of one game, he was changed by the serpent Karkotaka's bite into the dwarfish Bahuka and served King Rituparna of Ayodhya as a charioteer.

After many years of grief, through Damayanti's wisdom, he found her again. From Rituparna he learned the secret of dice, called Akshahridaya. Then Kali left his body. Nala called Pushkara to the game once more, this time with a clear mind. He won and recovered his kingdom. Yet he did not punish Pushkara but sent him away with kindness.

The story says what Valluvar says. Gambling takes not only a man's wealth but his clothes, food, family and peace of mind. It brought down a king of great virtue. Nala recovered because of his own wisdom and Damayanti's patience and love. To recover after losing is rare, and the story teaches that the wise never step into the game at all.

Key lessons

  • Even a win at dice is only the bait on the angler's hook.
  • In a trade where one gains a single coin and loses a hundred there is no road to a good life.
  • Gambling destroys wealth, fame, learning, clothing and food together.
  • The craving grows with each loss, so the only safety is never to begin.
  • Even men firm in dharma fell to dice, so no one should treat it lightly.
