Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 4Dhruva and His Mother Suniti
From the Srimad Bhagavatam. When the boy Dhruva tried to sit on his father Uttanapada's lap, his stepmother Suruchi drove him away. When he came home weeping, his mother Suniti said, 'Pray to the Lord; he alone will give you a high place.'
The five-year-old went to the forest and performed fierce penance, and Vishnu appeared to him. Dhruva later ruled long and righteously. At the end, when a celestial chariot came to take him, he said, 'I will not go without my mother.' Then he was shown Suniti going ahead of him in another chariot.
The mother was raised by the greatness of her son. Dhruva shines to this day as the steady Pole Star in the north.
