Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaRama's Bed of Grass
From the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Coming to the forest in search of Rama, Bharata met Guha at Sringaverapura and asked, 'Where did my brother sleep?' Guha pointed to the foot of an ingudi tree.
There the bed of darbha grass on which Rama and Sita had lain still bore their impression. Seeing that those who had slept on silk in the palace had slept on the bare ground, Bharata wept aloud and vowed, 'From now on, I too will sleep on the ground until he returns.'
That night Rama slept on grass, yet his mind was at peace. A mattress rests the body; a clear mind is the true grace of sleep.
