Explanation

Wealth from the plough never fails, says Avvaiyar. Trade may suffer losses and office may be taken away, but when soil and labour come together, new wealth grows every season.

That is why our tradition honours farming alongside the divine. Balarama is praised as Haladhara, 'the bearer of the plough'.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10

Balarama Draws the Yamuna

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Balarama, Krishna's elder brother, always carried the plough as his weapon. Once he came to Gokula and stayed with the cowherds in a grove on the bank of the Yamuna.

Wishing to bathe, Balarama called the Yamuna to come near. The river did not come. Angered, Balarama caught the Yamuna with the tip of his plough and dragged her. The frightened river bowed and began to flow along the path he wished, and the land along that path received water.

The Bhagavatam says that even today one can see the Yamuna flowing along the course Balarama dragged her. The strength of the plough brought the river itself to the fields.
