Dakshinamurthy tradition (Dakshinamurthy Stotram)The Silent Teacher
From the tradition of Dakshinamurthy. The four sages Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanatkumara were sons of Brahma. Though they had studied many scriptures, the doubts in their minds were not resolved, and they sought Shiva to know the truth.
Shiva sat facing south beneath a banyan tree as a youthful teacher, Dakshinamurthy. He spoke not a word. Showing the chin mudra, the gesture of knowledge, he sat in silence.
In that very silence all the doubts of the aged sages dissolved. Adi Shankara celebrates it: 'The teacher is young, the disciples are old; the teaching is silence, and the disciples' doubts are dispelled.' Wisdom begins where words end.
