Explanation

However wealthy you are, says Avvaiyar, spend with a sense of measure. Even a great river dries up without its springs, and even great wealth melts away when spent without limit.

Thiruvalluvar says the same: even if income is small, there is no harm as long as spending does not exceed it (Kural 478).

Mahabharata, Vana Parva

Agastya Checks the Kings' Accounts

From the Mahabharata, Vana Parva. When the sage Agastya married Lopamudra, he needed wealth to run a household. To ask for it, he went first to King Shrutarvan.

'Show me your income and expenses,' he said. 'I will take only what is beyond your needs.' When he looked at the accounts, the king's income and expenditure were exactly equal. 'If I take from this, your people will go short,' said Agastya, and took nothing. It was the same with the kings Bradhnashva and Trasadasyu.

At last they all went together to the wealthy demon Ilvala. Even rich kings spent with a sense of measure, and Agastya respected that measure.

To reflect on

Could you go through your expenses once and trim one that is not needed?
