பொருள்

ஒன்றை நினைத்தால் அது நடக்காமல் வேறொன்று நடக்கும்; அல்லது நினைத்ததே வரலாம்; நினைக்காத ஒன்று முன்வந்து நிற்கலாம். இவை எல்லாம் என்னை ஆளும் ஈசனின் செயல்.

Meaning

Think of one thing and it may fail while another comes about; or what you thought of may come; or something never imagined may appear before you. All this is the work of the Lord who rules me.

விளக்கம்

ஒன்றை நினைத்தால் அது நடக்காமல் வேறொன்று நடக்கலாம்; அல்லது நினைத்ததே நடக்கலாம்; அல்லது நினைக்காத ஒன்று திடீரென்று முன்னே வந்து நிற்கலாம். இவை எல்லாம் என்னை ஆளும் இறைவனின் செயல் என்கிறார் ஔவை.

வாழ்வின் மூன்று சாத்தியங்களையும் இந்தப் பாடல் ஒரே இடத்தில் வைக்கிறது. நினைத்தது நடக்காமை, நினைத்தது நடத்தல், நினைக்காதது நடத்தல். மூன்றையும் ஒரே மனநிலையோடு ஏற்கச் சொல்கிறது.

“எனை ஆளும் ஈசன்” என்ற சொற்களில் ஒரு நம்பிக்கை உள்ளது. நடப்பது எல்லாம் தற்செயல் அல்ல; அன்போடு ஆளும் ஒருவரின் செயல். அந்த நம்பிக்கை ஏமாற்றத்தையும் அமைதியாக்குகிறது.

Explanation

Think of one thing and it may not happen, while something else does; or what you thought of may come; or something you never imagined may suddenly appear before you. All this, says Avvaiyar, is the work of the Lord who rules me.

The verse sets all three possibilities of life side by side: what we wanted not happening, what we wanted happening, and what we never thought of happening. It asks us to meet all three with the same mind.

The words 'the Lord who rules me' carry a trust. What happens is not mere chance but the work of one who rules with love. That trust brings peace even to disappointment.

வேள்வி காக்கச் சென்றவனுக்கு வந்த மணமகள்

வால்மீகி இராமாயணத்திலிருந்து. விசுவாமித்திர முனிவர் தம் வேள்வியை அரக்கர்களிடமிருந்து காக்க, இளைஞர்களான இராமனையும் இலக்குவனையும் தசரதனிடம் கேட்டு அழைத்துச் சென்றார். தசரதன் நினைத்தது, மகன்கள் சில நாளில் திரும்புவார்கள் என்பதே. இராமன் நினைத்தது, முனிவரின் வேள்வியைக் காப்பதே.

வேள்வி முடிந்ததும் விசுவாமித்திரர், “மிதிலையில் ஜனகனிடம் ஒரு பெரிய சிவதனுசு இருக்கிறது; அதைப் பார்க்கச் செல்வோம்” என்றார். வழியில் அகலிகைக்குச் சாப விமோசனம் நடந்தது.

மிதிலையில், எந்த மன்னனாலும் அசைக்கக்கூட முடியாத அந்த வில்லை இராமன் எளிதாக எடுத்து நாணேற்ற, அது நடுவே முறிந்தது. ஜனகன் சொன்னபடி சீதை இராமனுக்கு மாலையிட்டாள். அயோத்தியிலிருந்து தசரதன் வந்து, நான்கு மைந்தர்களுக்கும் ஒரே நேரத்தில் திருமணம் நடந்தது.

வேள்வி காக்கப் புறப்பட்ட இளைஞன் மணமகனாகத் திரும்பினான். யாரும் நினைக்காதது முன்னே வந்து நின்றது. அதுவே ஈசன் செயல்.

Sent to Guard a Sacrifice, Rama Found a Bride

From the Valmiki Ramayana. The sage Vishwamitra asked King Dasharatha for the young Rama and Lakshmana to protect his sacrifice from demons. Dasharatha expected his sons back in a few days, and Rama thought only of guarding the sage's sacrifice.

When the sacrifice was complete, Vishwamitra said, 'King Janaka of Mithila has a great bow of Shiva. Let us go and see it.' On the way, Ahalya was freed from her curse.

In Mithila, Rama easily lifted the bow that no king had even been able to move, and as he strung it, it broke in the middle. As Janaka had promised, Sita garlanded Rama. Dasharatha came from Ayodhya, and all four of his sons were married at the same time.

The young man who set out to guard a sacrifice came home a bridegroom. Something no one had thought of came and stood before them. That is the Lord's doing.
