The life of Abirami Bhattar, Thirukkadaiyur traditionThe Seventy-ninth Verse and the New-Moon Night's Full Moon
From the tradition of Thirukkadaiyur. It was the night of Thai Amavasai. On King Serfoji's orders a great fire had been lit before the temple, and above it, on a platform hung from a hundred ropes, sat Bhattar. The townspeople gathered; some mocked, some wept.
Without fear, Bhattar began to sing to the Mother. At the end of each verse one rope was cut. As the platform sank lower, the heat of the fire came closer, yet his voice did not waver. When he sang the seventy-ninth verse, 'In Abirami Valli's eyes there is grace', a great light appeared in the sky. Mother Abirami gave her vision, took off her earring and threw it into the sky. It shone as a full moon in the dark new-moon sky.
The people cried out in joy. King Serfoji ran forward, fell at Bhattar's feet and begged his forgiveness, and tradition says he granted him lands. At the very moment Bhattar sang that grace is in the Mother's eyes, that grace rose into the sky as the moon for everyone to see.
