Explanation

Lightning is beautiful and brilliant, and it is gone in an instant. Worldly life is the same. The poet, who ran after it, looks at himself with astonishment: 'Ennae!', what has become of me!

The third line makes a lovely turn. What do people chase in the world? Pon, gold; mani, gems; porul, wealth. The poet takes these very words and makes them names for Murugan: 'Ponnae! Maniyae! Porulae!' Then he adds one more: 'Arulae!', O grace. Instead of the gold that passes, the gold that lasts; instead of the lightning, the gem that never stops shining.

There is practical wisdom here. Desire is not destroyed by force; it is redirected. The heart that loves gold can learn to love the Lord as its gold. The longing stays; only its object changes, from what flashes and fades to what shines for ever.

Mahabharata, Vana Parva, the Yaksha's questions

The Greatest Wonder in the World

From the Mahabharata. During their exile in the forest, the Pandavas, faint with thirst, came to a lake. One after another, four brothers drank its water without answering the questions of the Yaksha who guarded it, and fell lifeless. At last Yudhishthira came and patiently answered every question.

One of them was: 'What is the greatest wonder in the world?' Yudhishthira replied: 'Every day countless beings go to the abode of Death. Seeing this, those who remain still think they will live for ever. What could be more wonderful than that?'

The Yaksha, pleased, revealed himself as Dharma, the god of righteousness, Yudhishthira's own divine father, and restored all the brothers to life. The wonder Yudhishthira named, trusting a lightning-flash life as if it would last, is exactly what makes Arunagirinathar exclaim 'Ennae!' in this verse.

To reflect on

How can you tell whether something you chase as gold is really only a flash of lightning?
