Meaning

Is there anything not joined to the Lord who owns all wealth? The Veda speaks of his thousand names, his thousand strong great arms, his thousand heads crowned with tulasi garlands. And along with these, the thousand verses of Sadagopan of Kurugur, a nectar one never tires of, belong to that same Hari.

Explanation

The word 'thousand' comes four times in the verse: a thousand names, a thousand arms, a thousand heads, a thousand verses. A thousand is the measure of God's greatness, and the Alvar's songs are a thousand too. So those songs become one of God's ornaments.

It is a lovely fancy: the thousand verses of the Thiruvaimozhi are like a thousand garlands placed on the Lord's thousand heads.

Mahabharata, Anushasana Parva

The Thousand Names Spoken on the Bed of Arrows

From the Mahabharata. The Kurukshetra war was over. Bhishma lay on his bed of arrows, waiting for the sun's northward turn. Yudhishthira, troubled in heart despite his victory, went to him on Krishna's advice to ask about dharma.

After many questions he asked: 'Who is the one God of the world? What is the goal all should reach? By praising whom do people gain good? By what prayer is one freed from the bond of birth?'

Then Bhishma, gazing at Krishna who stood close by, spoke the thousand names of Vishnu: 'Vishvam, Vishnuh, Vashatkarah...' That is the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama. Each name tells one quality of God. Even on his deathbed Bhishma praised God with a thousand names. Kambar links this with the Alvar, who praised him with a thousand verses.
