Meaning

Will our Lord of Kurugur give his golden magizh garland to this girl with her lovely bangles? Evening has come. On the shore, broken shells, pearls and fish-roe lie mixed together. The striped conches and the swans are quarrelling among themselves, and a right-whorled valampuri conch slips between them and settles the dispute. Such is the rich land of our protector.

Explanation

In love poems, longing for the beloved's garland is a sign of love. As Andal longed to wear the Lord's garland, this girl longs for Maran's magizh garland.

Evening is the hardest hour for those apart. At that hour, conches and swans quarrelling on the shore and a valampuri conch settling the quarrel make a lovely image. It speaks of the richness of the Alvar's land, and of the peace there in which every quarrel is settled.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 52

Rukmini's Letter

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. Rukmini, princess of Vidarbha, had heard so much of Krishna's qualities that she wished to marry him alone. But her brother Rukmi arranged to give her to Shishupala.

Rukmini sent a letter to Krishna through a trusted brahmin: 'Most beautiful one in the world, hearing of your qualities my heart has left all shyness and gone to you. Shall a jackal touch what belongs to the lion? On the day before the wedding I will go to the temple to worship our family goddess Ambika. Come there and take me away. If you do not come, I will take birth after birth until I reach you.'

Reading the letter, Krishna at once mounted his chariot and went to Vidarbha. As Rukmini came out of the temple, he lifted her into his chariot and carried her away. Like the heroine of this verse, longing for her beloved's garland, Rukmini waited with the firmness of love.
