Meaning

Has a flood spread somewhere other than over the lotus? Has a dark stain spread over the white moon, with the hare taken away? On the red face of this girl, slender as a young branch of Kurugur, the town of the king of poets, ringed by fields of clear water: is it her heart that has spread out there, or her eyes? We cannot tell at all!

Explanation

In Tamil poetry, doubt is a lovely figure of speech. Is it a lotus or the moon? Are these eyes, or her heart? The poet gives no answer and stands in wonder; that wonder is the measure of the beauty.

It is worth noticing that Kambar calls the Alvar 'king of poets'. Kambar, himself honoured as 'emperor of poets', calls the Alvar the king of poets.

Kamba Ramayanam, Bala Kandam (the scene at Mithila)

'He Looked, and She Looked'

From the Kamba Ramayanam. With Vishwamitra, Rama and Lakshmana entered the city of Mithila. As they walked through its streets, Sita stood with her companions on the upper terrace of a mansion.

Kambar sings of that moment: 'As she of beauty beyond counting stood there, eyes caught eyes and drank each other in; their feelings would not stay apart but became one. He looked, and she looked.'

In a single glance their two hearts were joined; the heart spread out through the eyes. The same Kambar, in this verse, looks at the eyes of the girl of Kurugur and asks, 'Are these her eyes, or her heart?' No one has said as beautifully as Kambar that the eyes are windows of the heart.
