Meaning

Home, great wealth, children and all the other joys of life became, for him, ways of thinking of God: such is the Lord, the pure one of Kurugur. Through the Tamil poetry he composed, the Vedas themselves were freed of darkness; their meaning shone out; the distortions around them were turned away; their faults were removed.

Explanation

At the close of a hundred verses, Kambar names two great gifts of the Alvar. One: he made every part of life a way of thinking of God. There is no need to flee home, wealth or children; through them one can think of God. Two: he made the meaning of the Veda clear in Tamil and lifted the darkness that had settled over it.

The book begins with the Veda and ends with the Veda. The Thiruvaimozhi is the Tamil Veda, and these hundred verses in its praise are the garland Kambar placed upon it.

The life of Kambar (Srirangam tradition)

'Have You Sung of Our Sadagopan?'

From the Srirangam tradition. When Kambar finished his Ramavataram, he wished to present it first before Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam. Scholars, poets and devotees gathered. But before the presentation began, tradition says, Ranganatha himself asked a question: 'Have you sung of our Sadagopan?'

Kambar was stunned. He had sung thousands of verses about Rama, yet not a single one about the Alvar who had sung of the Lord in a Thousand. In that moment he understood that God delights more in hearing his devotee praised than in hearing his own story.

He sang these hundred verses in praise of Nammalvar and presented them first before Ranganatha. Only after that was the Ramavataram presented. To this day the hall at Srirangam where Kambar presented his Ramayana is called the Kambar Mandapam. The lesson that praising God is not complete without praising his devotee gave birth to this book, and with it the book comes to its close.
