Explanation

This couplet says directly the difference between outer and inner purity. 'Manaththadhu maasu' means a fault lies in the mind. With that, they 'maandaar neeraadi', bathe like honoured people, and 'marainthozhugu maandhar palar', there are many who secretly practise wrong. 'Maandaar' here is a pointed word, hinting at those who act so that others believe they are good.

The couplet does not despise holy bathing. Bathing in sacred rivers like the Ganga and the Kaveri is honoured in our tradition as an act that gives purity. What Valluvar points out is only bathing as a mere outer show, without the aim of purifying the mind. Bodily cleanliness is needed, but it cannot replace purity of mind.

Commentators take 'maandaar' as 'as though honoured'. Some say 'neeraadi' stands as a sign of cleanliness by water and so refers to all outward rituals. In 'marainthozhugal' the concealment is important: the evil takes place where others do not know.

Our rituals and pilgrimages should help soften and purify our minds. Those who, after emerging from the river, speak kindly to others and repay their debts are the ones who reach the real fruit of that bath. Valluvar does not reject the tradition of holy bathing here; he rejects only its use as a mask.

A story

Seshan at the Mahamaham Tank

At Kumbakonam, once every twelve years, the Mahamaham festival is held. On that day lakhs of devotees bathe in the Mahamaham tank. It is believed that on that day many holy rivers, the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati and Kaveri, mingle in that tank, and people consider that bathing then removes sins. It is a great festival deeply rooted in our tradition.

That year a merchant named Seshan came to the festival with his family. He was in a dispute over inherited property with his brother. He had hidden a part of what was due to his brother. Outwardly he showed himself devout: a broad mark on his brow, a tulasi garland at his neck, a pot of holy water in hand. He dipped three times in the Mahamaham tank and cried aloud, 'All my sins are gone.'

On the bank sat an aged grandmother, a distant relative, who knew of Seshan's dispute. She asked gently, 'My son, river water removes the dirt of the body; to remove the dirt of the mind should you not give back to your brother what is his? Even after your bath, your hand still tightly holds his share.'

Seshan at first was angry. 'Who are you to ask me for justice?' he said. But the old woman said nothing and smiled. That night Seshan could not sleep and tossed about. The cool water of the tank had cleansed his body, but his mind was still heavy.

Next morning he sent word to his brother. When he came, Seshan returned the share he had hidden and asked pardon. The two embraced in tears. Only after that did Seshan feel that he had truly attained holiness.

The message of the story is that when the mind has dirt no holy water will wash it, but if we ourselves try to remove it, holy bathing helps.
