Meaning

O You who are beyond all the faculties, best of all to me, true God! When I take on the body born with me, and when I do not, is it You who sees it? Do You stand within me as fire stands hidden in a tree?

Explanation

The last line of this verse is difficult, and the meaning given here is only one reading. The thought is clear: whether the soul is joined to a body in bondage or has left the body, it is the Lord who stays with it and sees. Shaiva works use images like fire in wood, ghee in milk and oil in sesame to show the Lord hidden everywhere. Appar sang: 'Like fire in firewood and ghee in milk, the Lord of the great gem's light stands hidden.'

To reflect on

When will we kindle the fire that stands hidden within us?
