Explanation

Ordinarily we think of friendship as laughing together, talking and celebrating. Valluvar does not deny it, but he says that is not its whole purpose. 'Nagudharporuttandru' means 'not merely for laughter'. When a friend goes beyond limits, 'migudhikkan merchendru idithar porutu' says the purpose is to step forward and rebuke him. 'Idithal' means to say the truth sharply; in ancient times scholars who dared to rebuke kings were honoured as 'idippaar'.

Two duties are involved. One is to speak the truth boldly when a friend errs; the other is to receive such a rebuke with patience. There are many who praise and few who correct. One who sees a fault and stays silent values his comfort above the friendship. As a mother feeds a bitter medicine, a friend who tells a hard truth with tenderness brings health.

This matters greatly today. Social media is full of likes and compliments, and almost nobody contradicts another. In such a climate a friend who points out a fault is a rare gift. We should look for such friends, and honour their words when they come.

There is also the question of how to rebuke. Valluvar's word 'idithal' carries force, but later verses on friendship make clear that the aim is the friend's good, not our victory. A rebuke that humbles a friend before others is not friendship; one that is given in private, with affection and with the readiness to stay beside him afterward, is.

A story

Arjuna and Krishna

This scene is from the Mahabharata, at the start of the battle of Kurukshetra. Both armies stood arrayed. Standing in his chariot, Arjuna saw his kinsmen, teachers and grandsires before him. He let the Gandiva bow slip from his hand. His mouth went dry, his body trembled, and he sat down in the chariot saying, "I will not fight."

His charioteer was Krishna, his dear friend. He had many consoling words at hand. But Krishna did not comfort him with sweet words; he began sternly. "Partha, do not yield to this weakness, which does not befit you; rise above this smallness of heart," the opening of the Bhagavad Gita tells, as he rebuked his friend.

Only then did Krishna explain the truths of life to him. The body perishes, the self does not. Duty is to be done without craving its fruit. To stand with dharma is the responsibility of each. In the long dialogue Arjuna asked many questions, and Krishna answered each with patience.

At the end Arjuna said, "My delusion is gone; I shall act as you say." He rose and took up his bow. Krishna's rebuke did not remain anger; it turned into the way forward.

The scene reveals the full purpose of friendship. A friend does not merely console a friend in distress; when he falters, he speaks the truth even sharply. That sternness was born of love. What Valluvar calls going forward to rebuke happened on that field of Kurukshetra.
