Explanation

This verse lays three duties on the true friend. First, 'azhivinavai neekki': to turn the friend away from ruinous deeds, whether gambling, drinking, falsehood or envy, when he is slipping into them. Second, 'aaruyththu': to lead him along the right path. It is not enough to prevent a fault; one shows him what is good for him and walks with him in that direction. Third, 'azhivinkan allal uzhappadhu': when he falls into distress, to remain beside him and carry that suffering as one's own.

The three follow an order: prevent before it comes, guide along the good road, and bear the burden after it falls. Preventing needs wisdom, guiding needs love, and bearing needs sacrifice. If any one is missing, friendship is incomplete. One who stands by in sorrow but never stops a fault is loving but unwise; an adviser who leaves when sorrow comes is wise but loveless.

In everyday life, when friends fall into wrong habits it is easy simply to avoid them. True friendship fights alongside them, and even after they fall it does not let go but lifts them up. This verse gives us three questions with which to measure our friendships.

Notice too the humility hidden in the third duty. The friend who shares the suffering does not stand above it as a judge; he enters it. After he has entered, his counsel carries weight, because he has paid the price of giving it.

A story

The Night of the Chariot Festival

When the Aadi Pooram chariot festival came, a small village near Thiruvarur put on a festive look. In that village lived two friends, Siva and Ramu. Siva had earned a little money in trade. At festival time there was usually gambling behind a tent, and that day a friend invited Siva to go there.

As Siva began to walk that way, Ramu caught his shoulder. "Do not, Siva. This is not the path our fathers showed. On a day when we pull the chariot before the Lord, you must not go there," he said. Siva grew angry. "Who are you to stop me? It is only once." Ramu said patiently, "Those who began with once are the ones who lost their land. I will go with you to pull the chariot. Come." Siva understood the love in those words and went with him.

That day both held the chariot rope. A joy filled Siva that was purer than any joy gambling could give.

A few months later Siva's shop was burnt down by fire. Everything was lost. The villagers showed sympathy, but Ramu brought his savings and said, "Let us rebuild it together." For many months he stayed with him, fixed planks to the shop and arranged stock.

One day Siva said to him, "If you had not stopped me that day, my property would have gone too; if you had not stood beside me today, my heart would have gone." Ramu laughed. "Stopping and bearing are two hands of one friendship."
