Explanation

"Nalam" refers to good qualities and loving conduct. "Naar" is like fibre that binds, that is, love and compassion. Valluvar says that if a man, in a place where he tries to do good or appear good, shows lack of love or harshness, the world will doubt, "Is he truly of a good family?" The eminence of a family shows in the loving conduct of its members. Where that love is absent, others begin to doubt the claim itself.

This is a subtle social truth. Society judges a man's family by his words, expression and conduct. If he speaks harshly to others, they criticise his parents and the house he grew up in. So each person takes on the responsibility of guarding the family's name by his acts. This responsibility is not a burden but a dignity.

In Hindu tradition honouring parents is stressed in "matru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava." One way to honour them is to give the world a good impression through the character they nurtured. Some commentators take "naar" as love, others as moisture or compassion. Either way, lack of love puts the family in question.

Where love is absent, wealth and learning do not become complete. However educated a man is or however much he earns, if he shows no respect to others, the world feels his family's teaching has been wasted. Loving conduct is therefore the true guard of the family name.

A story

Harshness to the Flower-Seller

This is an imagined tale; its setting is a temple street in Kanchipuram.

On the temple street of Ekambaranathar in Kanchipuram, an old flower-seller sold garlands of jasmine, mullai and chrysanthemum every day. One day Sivakumar, a young man of the town's leading merchant family, came there. His father was held in great esteem in the town. The family was famous for helping many. Sivakumar had studied abroad and returned.

While buying a garland he asked the price. The old woman said softly, "Five rupees, son." "So much? You are cheating!" Sivakumar shouted in anger. With trembling hands she said, "No, son, the price of jasmine has gone up today." He abused her harshly: "Old woman, you do not know your trade." He threw the garland into her basket and left.

Some people standing there looked at one another. "Is this really the son of that good family?" they muttered. An old man said, "After all that education, should he speak so to an old woman? His father would be grieved to hear it." When Sivakumar heard this, his heart burned.

That evening he told his father what had happened. The father said calmly, "Our family's name lies not in our money, my son, but in our conduct. The harshness you showed an old woman has brought our house into doubt." The next day Sivakumar went to the old woman, begged her pardon, bought all her garlands and offered them at the temple. After that a new sweetness entered his speech.
