Meaning

The friendship of the learned who understand your mind is like eating sugarcane from the tender top down: always growing sweeter. The friendship of those without warmth is like eating it from the root up towards the top: growing less sweet with every bite.

Explanation

The same sugarcane image appears in verse 138. Naladiyar is not shy of reusing a good image.

Whether a friendship sweetens or sours with time is the measure of it.

The Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda

Should Vibhishana Be Trusted?

From the Ramayana. Vibhishana, Ravana's own brother, crossed the sea and asked to join Rama after Ravana drove him from the court for urging him to return Sita. Sugriva was suspicious: a brother who leaves his brother may leave us too. Rama asked every leader for his view.

Each spoke. Hanuman said he had watched Vibhishana in Lanka and judged by his words and face that he was honest and had come because of Ravana's wrongdoing. Rama weighed it all, then accepted him, saying he would never turn away one who came seeking refuge. Friendship was offered only after it was examined, and the friend proved true to the end.
