பலநாளும் பக்கத்தா ராயினும் நெஞ்சில்சிலநாளும் ஒட்டாரோ டொட்டார் - பலநாளும்நீத்தா ரெனக்கை விடலுண்டோ தந்நெஞ்சத்தியாத்தாரோ டியாத்த தொடர்பு.

பொருள்
பல நாட்கள் பக்கத்தில் இருந்தவரே ஆயினும், நெஞ்சில் ஒட்டாதவரோடு ஒட்டாதே. பல நாட்களாகப் பிரிந்தவர் என்று கைவிடல் உண்டோ? தொடர்பு என்பது தம் நெஞ்சத்தோடு இயைந்தாரோடு இயைந்ததே.
Meaning
Though they have stood at your side for many days, do not join with those who have not joined your heart. And is there a letting go of those long parted, on the ground that they are gone? The bond is only with those one's own heart has joined.

பாடல் நெருக்கத்தை இரண்டு அளவுகளால் அளக்கிறது; இரண்டும் நேரம் சார்ந்தவை அல்ல. தினமும் பக்கத்தில் இருத்தல் தொடர்பை உருவாக்காது; நெஞ்சம் ஒட்டவில்லை என்றால் அந்த நாட்கள் எல்லாம் கணக்கில் வராது. 'ஒட்டாதார்' என்பது விலகி நிற்பவர் அல்ல, ஒட்டவே முடியாதவர்.
பிறகு பாடல் பிரிந்தவர் பக்கம் திரும்புகிறது: பல நாள் பிரிந்தவனைப் 'போனவன்' என்று கைவிடுவது முறையா? தொடர்பு நினைவில், நெஞ்சத்தில் இயைந்தவர் மேல். ஆகவே இடத்தின் தொலைவு அதை அறுக்காது; இடத்தின் நெருக்கமும் அதை உருவாக்காது.
Explanation
The verse measures nearness by two things, neither of which is time. Standing at your side every day does not create a bond; where the heart has not joined, those days do not enter the reckoning. The ones who have not joined are not merely distant — they are ones who cannot join.
Then the verse turns towards the absent: is a man to be let go as 'gone' because many days have passed since he left? The bond lives in memory, in the place where the heart joined. So distance of place does not cut it, and nearness of place does not make it.
