Koattuppoop poala malarnthupir koompaathu / Vaettathae vaettathaam natpaatsi - thoatta / Kayappooppoal munmalarnthu pirkoompu vaarai / Nayappaarum natpaarum il.

Meaning

To blossom like the flower on the branch and not close afterwards, wanting still what was wanted — that is the rule of friendship. For those who, like the lily in the pond, open first and then close, there are neither lovers nor friends.

Explanation

Two flowers, two rules. The flower on the branch blossoms and stays open; 'what was wanted remains the wanted thing' — what it once wanted it still wants, in the same way. That steadiness is what the verse names the rule of friendship: the first opening is not the friendship, the not-closing is.

The lily in the pond, on the other hand, opens in the morning and shuts itself again by evening. For such a person there are neither lovers nor friends — two losses in one closing. The verse is deliberately severe here: one closing is enough to undo the fact of having opened.

To reflect on

Opening is only the beginning; not closing is the friendship.
