Meaning

A man's good nature is hard enough to see even with the eye; so for those small-minded folk who stand close and speak only of faults until that nature is spoiled — what was such a tongue made of?

Explanation

The question rises out of wonder. A man's nature is hard to see even with the eye. So how was a tongue formed that stands close and speaks nothing but faults?

Blaming here is not criticism; it is erasure. The phrase 'till that nature is spoiled' matters — when faults are named, the good in a person is spoiled along with them. So the verse asks not about the making of a tongue but about its character. Faults are easy to spot and good nature is hard; whoever picks the easy one mistakes laziness for insight.

To reflect on

Faults are easy to see and good nature hard; choosing the easy one is laziness.
