Meaning

The heroic gaze of Murugan's holy eyes, his victorious spear and his peacock stand before me and guard me at every hour. My raft is coming to the shore of the cool ocean of grace of the Mother, Neeli Parashakti. My heart seeks the zeal of Kandan. He plays on the slopes of the hills, and he always crushes the sufferings of the gods.

Longing for Valli, the fruit of the hunters' clan, he wandered in the guise of an ascetic. So that the Tamil land might win great fame, he taught this language to the sage Agastya. So that the long night of the gods might break into dawn, he raged against the heavy mountains of darkness. Even the First One who holds the Veda called him guru, and he rose in true glory.

He married Deivayanai, daughter of the gods, and slew the asura on the southern island. He became the leader of all people. His good mouth makes the meaning of the Veda understood. He gives sweet grace to Tamil poets; he makes the rain of dharma fall on this earth; he knows the heart's longing and adds his grace to it; every day he feeds us courage and valour.

The Vedic sages of old raised the sacred fire and showed the glory of serving you; they founded a land of shining red gold; through your greatness they established dharma. Jaya! We will come to the hills where you grow, and stand there and sing of serving you. The one who grants boons is Mother Parashakti herself; we will seek her, saying, 'your sweet grace is all we want'.

Explanation

In this song Murugan is at once the god of Tamil and the god of the Veda. The tradition that he taught Tamil to Agastya is here, and the same Murugan has 'the mouth that makes the meaning of the Veda understood'. Tamil and Veda are not set apart.

'Even the First One who holds the Veda called him guru' recalls the story of Swaminathan: Murugan imprisoned Brahma, who could not explain the Pranava, and then taught the meaning of Om to Shiva himself.

The last part tells how the Vedic sages raised the sacred fire to praise him. Behind this is the old understanding that Agni and Skanda are one. Through that fire of sacrifice, Bharathiyar believes, dharma and prosperity were established in the land.

'He knows the heart's longing and adds his grace to it' - what is your heart's real longing?
