Meaning
Parashakti! I want a small piece of land, a kaani. In the middle of that land, build me a house with beautiful pillars and good terraces of pure white. There, by the well, let there be coconut palms, their fronds and their tender coconuts.
Let ten or twelve coconut palms stand nearby. Let the moonlight, like the lustre of a fine pearl, fall at the front of the house. Let the call of the singing koel come just a little way and touch my ear. To gladden my heart, let a gentle young breeze blow well.
To blend with my song, let there be a faithful woman, my wife. In our shared delight, let her bring me poems. Mother! In that open wild country, let me have your protection. And by the power of my song, let me care for this whole world.

Explanation
This is one of Bharathiyar's best-loved songs. What he asks of God is very small: a piece of land, a house, a few coconut palms, moonlight, a koel, a breeze. No kingdom, no fortune.
The last line changes everything: 'by the power of my song, let me care for this whole world.' The little plot is not for rest. It is where songs that protect the world are to be written, the poet's place of tapas.
Notice too that the wife is to 'bring me poems'. She is no servant but a partner in poetry. Family life, poetry and the Mother's grace all meet on one small plot of land.

To reflect on
What is your own 'kaani nilam', your small piece of ground? What would you give the world from there?
