Meaning

Mother! What I resolve must be achieved, and I must resolve only what is good. I need a firm heart, and a clear, good understanding. All the sins I have committed must vanish here, now that I have come before you, like mist before the sun.

Explanation

This eight-line song is sung as a morning prayer in schools across Tamil Nadu. Its simplicity is its strength.

Notice the order: first 'what I resolve must be achieved', and at once 'I must resolve only what is good'. Before asking that his will be done, he asks for a mind that wills only good. Power and goodness must come together.

Sin as mist and the Mother's grace as the sun is a lovely image. Mist needs no effort to remove; when the sun rises it simply disappears. So too, merely standing before the Mother dissolves sin. That is the faith of surrender, sharanagati.

To reflect on

Why must 'resolving only what is good' come before 'having what I resolve achieved'?
