Meaning

Our Lord! Lord! Lord! How many millions of joys you have placed in this world!

You joined chit, conscious spirit, with achit, unconscious matter. There you built the vast world made of the five great elements. You made all those worlds a treasury of colours and fashioned beauty upon beauty in them.

You made a state called mukti, liberation, and in it you placed the awareness that knows the whole. And you also laid out a state called bhakti, devotion. Our Supreme! Supreme! Supreme!

Explanation

This is a song of wonder. 'How many millions of joys!' - the question is its own answer. Bharathiyar turns away from the mood that dismisses the world as suffering and sees it as a storehouse of joys that God has placed there.

Chit, achit and Ishvara - conscious beings, insentient matter and the Lord - are the three realities at the base of both Vaishnava and Shaiva Siddhanta thought. Joining spirit to matter is God's act, and colour and beauty are born from that joining.

In the second verse mukti and bhakti appear as two states. In mukti there is the knowing of all; in bhakti there is the calling, 'Supreme! Supreme!' For Bharathiyar both are God's gifts, and devotion is no lesser thing than liberation.
