Meaning

Parrot! Can you tell him? Can you tell him? Can you tell the mighty spear-bearer Murugan to come here, to join me, and delight and play with me?

Tell the precious son of Shiva, lord of the gods who dances in the hall of Thillai, to come and be one with me and rejoice.

Ask him how he learned to forget completely what he did one evening, near the lily pond, beside a jasmine bush.

Tell him to think again of the wondrous words he spoke, swearing with his hand upon his spear, as he held my hand and walked with me through the desert.

Explanation

Thoothu, the messenger poem, is an old Tamil form. A woman parted from her beloved sends a parrot, a cloud or a swan to carry her message. Here the beloved is Murugan and the messenger is a parrot, apt because it is the bird that speaks.

The message is delicate. She does not complain outright. She reminds him: how did you forget what happened that evening? Think of what you said with your hand on your spear. It can be read as Valli's voice, and also as the voice of the soul longing for God.

This mode, nayaka-nayaki bhava, in which the devotee speaks as the beloved and God as the lover, is the mode of the Alvars and the Nayanmars. God has given his word; the devotee reminds him of it. The ache of separation is itself the form devotion takes.

To reflect on

Where does a devotee get the right to say to God, 'remember what you promised'?
