Mukampaarth tharulnoakki munniranthu selvar / Akampaarkku marraaraip poala - mikungkaathal / Kaelaa virunthittaa nannaththaik kaelaarai / Vaalaal virunthitta man.
As those who come to beg first watch the faces of the wealthy for a look of kindness and try to read their hearts before they ask, so the king, who feeds his enemies to his sword, in his overflowing love gave the swan a feast before asking it anything.
Afraid of what news the swan may bring, Nalan does not ask at once; he first treats it as an honoured guest. The simile of the beggar watching the giver's face shows that the lover is now in the beggar's place.
The wordplay is fine: ‘a feast before asking’ for the friend, ‘a feast for the sword’ for the foe.
The swan that went to Damayanti returns to Nala.
Before asking the important question, first show kindness.
