Meaning
Listen, I will tell the inner faculties in order: mind, intellect, ego and memory. The mind grasps an object; the intellect decides on it; the ego rises again and again as 'I'; and memory (chittam) dwells on what has come. Understand this.

Explanation
The four inner faculties complete the twenty-four atma tattvas. When we see something, the mind grasps it, asking 'What is this?'; chittam reflects, comparing it with past experience; the intellect decides, 'It is a rope'; and the ego rises, 'I have understood'. The old example of the rope mistaken for a snake shows these four at work.
