Explanation

'Ondraamai' is a state of hearts not being one; 'ondriyaar' are those who are meant to be united, such as the royal court, kin or a circle of friends. Valluvar says that if difference of mind enters among them it is hard for the group to survive.

The word 'enjnaandrum' is important. This danger does not belong to a particular age; it is true at any time and for any group. Commentators take it as a warning for the royal court and ministers, since if unity breaks among them, the rule itself falters.

'Kanpadin' means if it falls in sight or enters. Disunity enters slowly, like something slipping in through an opening, and once in it is hard to drive out. So the guard against its entry is needed at the beginning.

The verse also tests leaders: they need the ability to see the unspoken differences among those with them. Before open quarrel begins, they should know where the bitterness lies and settle it.

Today, in firms and teams, bitterness within does more damage than outside competition. To value and protect unity is everyone's duty. Such early care costs little, while repairing a broken circle later costs everything. It protects the circle long before any quarrel becomes open.

A story

Damanaka, Pingalaka and Sanjivaka

The first book of the Panchatantra, the Mitrabheda, is about the breaking of friends. In a forest lived a lion king named Pingalaka. His ministers were two jackals, Damanaka and Karataka. One day a bull named Sanjivaka lost his way, came to that forest and bellowed.

The lion was afraid of the sound. Damanaka met the bull, saw his fearless nature, and brought him to the king. The lion and the bull became friends, and forgetting even the hunt, spent their days talking happily together.

Because of this Damanaka's influence declined; and since the lion did not go hunting, the jackals got no food. Jealousy and resentment rose in Damanaka. He planned to break the friendship.

He slowly told the lion, "Sire, Sanjivaka intends to kill you and seize the kingdom." Then he went to the bull and said, "The lion plans to make you his meal." Suspicion was sown on both sides.

The lion and the bull looked at each other with suspicion. The bull stood in defence; the lion took his stance for hostility and attacked. In the fight Sanjivaka died. Later, learning the truth, the lion grieved.

In this tale there was unity among friends, but one person's jealousy broke it. It shows the truth of the verse 'ondraamai ondriyaar kanpadin'.

Tradition takes it as a warning to kings: they must learn to identify sweet-tongued people who break unity.
