The Correction of Faults · Kutrangatidhal

This chapter tells the ruler to remove from himself faults such as pride, anger, miserliness and self-praise. It insists that only the one who first clears his own faults before looking at others' is safe.

Introduction

After the chapter on the Possession of Knowledge, Valluvar places the chapter on the Correction of Faults. 'Kadithal' means removing, weeding out. That is, removing faults. The reason for this order is that the person of knowledge must first look at himself. A ruler must govern himself before governing others. His faults are not merely personal faults; they can become the ruin of a country. So this chapter fits the Polity section well.

The first verse names three faults: pride, anger and meanness. It says the rise in wealth of those without these three is worthy of honour. The second names three more defects: miserliness, false pride that has lost its dignity, and unseemly joy. These are faults in a ruler. The third says that those who fear disgrace will take a fault as small as a millet grain to be as big as a palm tree. The fourth says that since faults are our enemy, they themselves must be guarded against.

The fifth says that the life of one who does not guard before danger comes will perish like a stack of hay before a fire. The sixth raises a fine question: if a ruler first removes his own faults and then begins to see others', what fault will he have? The seventh says that the wealth of a miser who does not do what he ought will not last and will perish. The eighth says that the grasping heart, miserliness, cannot be reckoned among any other fault; it stands above them.

The ninth says not to praise oneself, nor to desire an act that brings no good. The tenth closes: for one who can keep his wishes unknown to others, the schemes of enemies will come to nothing. Thus the chapter starts from faults of one's own nature and ends with the arts of self-defence.

Commentators differ on some words. 'Sirumai' is taken as meanness or as want of giving. 'Maana uvakai' is explained as joy that lacks dignity, or joy connected with lust. These are small differences; the aim of the chapter is one.

In today's world every person in a position of leadership can use this chapter as a checklist. Do I have pride? Do I have anger? Do I have a sharing heart? Do I praise myself? To ask these honestly is the beginning of correcting faults.

Chapter story

Nahusha

The story of King Nahusha is told in the Udyoga Parva and the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. Nahusha was a king of the lunar line, descended from Pururavas. He performed many sacrifices, ruled by dharma, and was honoured even by the gods. Once, when Indra lived in hiding for the sin of killing Vritra, the world of the gods needed a leader. The gods and sages chose Nahusha himself for the post of Indra.

At first Nahusha said humbly, 'I am without strength. How am I fit for this post?' The gods gave him their powers. He also received the boon that the strength of anyone he looked at would come to him. He began to rule the world of the gods.

But power woke the faults sleeping within him. He became proud. He thought he was not only Indra but the master of all pleasures. He desired Indra's wife Shachi. He called her: 'I am Indra; Indrani too is mine.' Shachi, with cunning, suggested, 'Come in a palanquin carried by sages. No Indra has done that before.'

Nahusha liked the idea and accepted it. He called the seven sages and made them carry the palanquin. His mind throbbed with desire. 'Sarpa, sarpa' (quickly, quickly), he commanded. Among them Agastya walked slowly. Angered, Nahusha kicked him. Agastya, enraged, cursed him: 'You will be born a serpent.'

Nahusha at once became a serpent and fell to earth. Later, when Yudhishthira met him in the forest exile, the serpent seized Bhima. When Yudhishthira answered the questions it asked, Nahusha was freed from his curse.

At first Nahusha had good qualities. But he gained power without clearing the faults of pride, anger and desire, and so he fell. It is a clear example that leadership with faults uncorrected brings only ruin.

In contrast, Yudhishthira met the same serpent calmly and with composure and gave it release. The mind of one who has weeded out his faults crosses any barrier. The power of one who has not weeded them out swallows him.

The conversation between Yudhishthira and the serpent Nahusha, in the Ajagara Parva of the Vana Parva, is very famous. When Bhima went hunting in the forest, a huge python coiled around him. Bhima could not free himself. In its grip his strength failed. Yudhishthira, coming in search of his brother, found him caught by the serpent.

The serpent spoke in human language. 'I am Nahusha. By Agastya's curse I am like this,' it said. It asked Yudhishthira many questions. To the question 'Who is a Brahmin?' Yudhishthira said, 'One who has truth, charity, patience, good character, freedom from cruelty, austerity and compassion; not by birth.' Those answers touched Nahusha's faults directly. He realised his pride and anger.

After hearing Yudhishthira's calm, clear answers, Nahusha left the serpent form and went to the heavens. The story shows that a way opens for one who recognises his faults and is freed from them. Nahusha fell because of his fault, and he rose again because he recognised it.
