Explanation

A millet grain is a tiny seed, and the palm is a very tall tree. Valluvar contrasts the smallest and the largest to show a quality. Those who take even a fault as small as a millet grain to be as big as a palm tree are those who shrink in shame from disgrace. They do not neglect even their small mistakes; they think of the consequences, feel sorry and correct themselves.

The depth of the word 'pazhinaanuvaar' deserves attention. 'Pazhi' is the scorn that others speak. To feel shame at it is not mere fear; it is a sense that guards one's self-respect and dharma. Such persons, even when a fault the size of a millet comes, realise that it may grow into disgrace, take it as big and remove it. A small fault is easy to remove at once; once grown it is hard to remove.

This is a trait of judging oneself harshly. In the world many see others' faults as palm-sized and their own as millet-sized. Valluvar turns that habit round: one should see one's own fault as palm-sized. This is the best way for a person's self-examination.

Some commentators explain it as meaning that a king should take even his small fault as great, since the people see it. As even a small error of a king is talked of over the whole country, he needs great care.

In life today it is easy to dismiss a small lie, a small lapse in honesty or a small slip in punctuality as 'nothing big'. But they become habits and grow into great faults. Those who feel shame at disgrace correct these at the start.

A story

Yudhishthira's Small Untruth

In the Drona Parva of the Mahabharata, on the fifteenth day of the Kurukshetra war, Drona was destroying the Pandava army. Knowing that he could not be defeated, Krishna suggested a plan. 'Drona will lay down his weapons if his son Ashvatthama dies. His mind will break if he hears the news of his death. But he will believe only Yudhishthira's word, since Yudhishthira does not tell a lie.'

Yudhishthira at first refused. 'I never speak a falsehood. I cannot do this,' he said. Krishna insisted. 'There is no other way to cut the war short. A small device for the victory of dharma,' he said. Meanwhile Bhima killed a war elephant named Ashvatthama and roared, 'Ashvatthama is dead.'

Drona did not believe it. He went to Yudhishthira: 'Tell me the truth; is my son dead?' Yudhishthira said in a loud voice, 'Ashvatthama is dead.' Then, softly, in a low voice, he added, 'the elephant.' Because conches were sounding, that last word did not reach Drona. Believing his son had died, Drona laid down his weapons and sat in meditation. Then Dhrishtadyumna killed him.

This was a small untruth, and not a whole lie but a half truth. Yet Yudhishthira took it as a palm-sized fault. Until then his chariot moved four fingers above the ground, the text says. At the very moment he spoke that half truth, the chariot came down to the earth. His heart came down too.

After the war, when Yudhishthira went to heaven, the Svargarohana Parva says he saw a vision of hell for a short while. Indra explained, tradition says, that the cause was that small untruth. It was a very small punishment, but Yudhishthira accepted it fully.

Yudhishthira was one who saw a millet-sized fault as palm-sized. That is why his dharma is honoured throughout the world.

What small untruth or lapse have you been letting pass as unimportant, and what would happen if you treated it as large?
