Explanation

This verse shows the brow's part subtly. It is the beloved's eyes that torment the lover. But he says that if her curved brows lowered a little and veiled the eyes his pain would lessen. 'Kodum puruvam' means brows curved like a bow. If they would not bend, that is, would cover the eyes, there would not be so much pain; that is the hint.

In truth he does not wish her eyes hidden; he says he cannot bear their impact. It is a paradox of love: the mind that asks to hide the glance it cannot bear also longs to look at it. The poet shows this paradox with a gentle smile. It is a Tamil convention to liken the brow to a bow and the eye to an arrow. A bow must bend to shoot an arrow; if it does not bend, no arrow flies. Here the charm is that if the brow does not bend and covers the eyes, no arrow is shot. Thus similes interweave and deepen the meaning.

If we look at this verse as a lesson, the beauty of tempering the intensity of feeling with refinement shows. The veil called modesty lessens the speed of beauty and joins it with culture. Modesty is the brow-screen that gives beauty restraint.

A story

The Lowered Gaze at the Wedding

In Tamil weddings there is the custom of the bride sitting with head bowed in modesty. At a wedding in a village near Tirunelveli the moment came when the groom Suresh was to see his bride Kavitha close by for the first time. As it was a match arranged by elders, the two had not talked long before.

After circling the fire, Kavitha bowed her head before the tying of the thali. Her gaze fell on her toes. Suresh looked at her from the corner of his eye. Her curved brows seemed to veil her eyelids; but when for a moment she looked up, his heart trembled.

Grandmother sat beside Kavitha and said smiling, 'Do not lift your eyes; keep your head bowed.' Hearing it, Suresh's mother smiled, 'Lowering the eyes itself is her beauty.' In that simple talk was the sweetness of the wedding dais.

Every rite took place on the dais: panigrahana, the seven steps, the showing of Arundhati. When Arundhati star was shown, Kavitha raised her head and looked at the sky. Suresh looked at it too. That was their first sharing.

That night, after songs, nalangu and laughter were over, Suresh said softly to Kavitha, 'When your eyes lowered, your beauty grew.' Kavitha lowered her eyes again in modesty. The brow-screen of the verse came alive that day.

This scene tells us that modesty does not lessen beauty; it increases it. The restraint seen in a lowered gaze is what captivates the heart most.
